"In performance Peter's speaking voice is very pleasant too - rich and lilting, and posh-but-not-plummy as that Independent article said. Who would guess that it can become such a Noisy Beast in song." - Charlotte Hendry |

Mid-evening, Dave Jackson played with Mr Averell (featuring René van Commenée) Photographs by Eelco Van Londen |

"We were rather perplexed by the venue - it was absolutely PACKED throughout, making it a nightmare to get a drink (plus you had to queue first for tokens to BUY the bloody drinks!). With hours to kill between the main events we were very pleased to find Mr Averell so entertaining... loved the megaphones and all those coats (madder than a cut snake) ... and of course, there was that rather marvelous guest appearance! In fact, the first song ('Chernobyl') Jaxon did with Rene was the best, and it was great to see David's flying bird impression." - Charlotte Hendry See more pictures on the Mr Averell website. |

VdGG were introduced by writer Michel Faber whose novel The Crimson Petal and the White has earned him international praise and a residency on the New York Times best-sellers list.
"At last, after a Dutch comedian fellow, Michel Faber (in VdGG t-shirt) took to the stage and gave them a terrific introduction. Lemmings was absolutely wild, and as I wrote before, at the front there was no problem with the sound, which was raw. In fact, the organ was the best yet - I could clearly hear every individual note, even the deepest ones, with no distortion. And my goodness, wasn't Hugh having fun? He made a mistake during Man Erg (I think) which would probably have made him run from the stage had he done it at the RFH show. Here, he had lightened up to the extent that he laughed... in fact, I've never seen his face so expressive! He really was having serious fun." - Charlotte Hendry

"And I took great delight in watching Guy throwing his sticks away again, and bringing one of his cymbals down. As for Jaxon - how does such a little guy hold so much puff?! He must be all lungs. I was amused to spot Michel Faber taking photos of the band and the audience from the wings. Great stuff!" - Charlotte Hendry |
